Survival of the Fittest (2013)

Double bill dance programme comprised of Nu.V.Na and Fight or Flight. Two contemporary dance works performed by 6 female dancers. Strong choreography with an energetic music score composed by Zory Burner, the two different pieces look at violence and basic instinct. Nu.V.Na fuses contemporary dance with martial arts, focusing on the clash between maintaining control and giving into our natural impulses.Fight or Flight looks at basic instinct, taking inspiration from the wildlife where a gazelle flees to save itself from a pack of lions, or a buffalo steps in to protect its baby.
  • Performed at Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2013.
  • Performances at Sweet Venues 1st-11th August 2013

Reviews for Survival of the Fittest (2013)

"a meditation on Darwinism and human nature" (Broadway Baby, 2013)

"Combining contemporary dance with stage combat and martial arts, it is a huge success...Nicolaides’ exceptionally strong and innovative choreography could almost stand alone in its portrayal of humanity’s violent nature" (Broadway Baby, 2013)

" an energetic and striking work in two parts. In the first they integrate martial arts techniques into their performance in order to portray a struggle between nature and instinct. In the second they revert to a tribal, animalistic state where the conflict is more fluid but no less vicious. Intricate choreography and expressive dancers make for a rather exciting display. " (Three Weeks, 2013)

Violence. Four dancers pushed to their extremes, capturing the physical and emotional struggle, when instinct and acquired behaviour clash to maintain control. Contemporary fused with martial arts. It’s “Nurture Versus Nature”.
